Ten Desires and Hopeless Masquerade are the culmination of a
new trend that began with Mountain of Faith, correct?

ZUN
(Z from below)

Ten Desires and Hopeless Masquerade have completely different concepts and origins; the timing for them just happened to line up. TD was a turning point in my career, a time where I thought about whether or not I wanted to continue working on Touhou. I envisioned three works starting with Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and three more starting with Mountain of Faith, so I thought, "Okay, now what?". Ten Desires is a big step forward in that there is no longer a "XX chapter from this point". I could continue the story for as long as I wanted, and I can end it whenever I wanted. The loss of a cohesive narrative may be unfortunate, but it's made continuing the story easier.

――

Up until now, you had the idea of making three projects in a row, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Z

The direction had been to make use of established characters to make the next installment, but it might be fair to say that this is no longer happening. Each installment was released one at a time, without any clue as to how each one will connect to the last. The reason I made that change is because I made the decision to continue working on Touhou.

――

You didn't have the option of continuing with three consecutive projects?

Z

It'd ultimately be repetitive, and I myself knew that I'd have to worry about that again if I made another three-pack, and I just didn't want to be bothered by that. That's why I chose to base Ten Desires—which came out after Imperishable Night and Phantasmagoria of Flower View—around the concept of "rebirth". I think of this installment as one that was suddenly released into the wild, forgetting about all the others that came before it. I wouldn't know what kinds of projects would come out after that.

――

I was wondering whether the "Mountain of Faith"-class would be organized by now.

Z

Even if I were to make something outlandish at this point, it'd be like I'd have already released it to the world, so whatever comes out, I'd just be like "Welp, that's just how it is". Otherwise, it'd be difficult to make any new projects.

――

Though, there does seem to be a trend of continuing the story from "Urban Legend in Limbo", isn't there?

Z

The projects I make with the folks over at Tasofro have a clear connection with one another, but anything I make on my own has no continuity at all (haha). Each work has a separate theme, and is created based around said theme. Ten Desires is based around themes of rebirth, reincarnation, and starting from scratch, hence why I borrowed the kanji for "spirit" () from Highly Responsive to Prayers's title (靈異伝). Mountain of Faith's title is based around that of Story of Eastern Wonderland's, and so forth; Gradually tracing back the kanji used in the titles was a way for me to return to my origins.

It's not so much a turning point, but a choice that was made in areas that are not publicly known. Nowadays, there's an upward trend of people saying that you should quit while you're still at your best...(haha). Actually, it's difficult for me to say whether that's possible on my end.

――

By the way, what would've happened if you had ended Touhou then and there?

Z

Then it would've been a trip to the izakaya for me (haha). Though I say that, there'd only be so much I can do then, so I'd ultimately end up making games again. But what bothered me while I worked on Mountain of Faith was that even if I were to make games of a different genre, as long as Touhou continues to remain popular, they'd only be viewed through the preconceived notion of "a game made by the guy who made Touhou Project", and I doubt that anything positive would come from that. So, if I were to decide to make an original game in the shoot-em-up genre, it'd probably end up being "Touhou".

――

Aah...

Z

Then I'd have to try to connect that original series to the world of Touhou, and the worldview'll end up collapsing on itself (haha). I was thinking I might do something completely different with Mountain of Faith, and I thought about making another three or so works. At the time of Ten Desires, I wondered what it meant to continue working on Touhou, if I were to continue doing so. Many ideas were put forward, such as going about things outside of a game format, or making it into a larger story or development. But I felt that coming up with a major vision was exhausting, and that it wouldn't work the way I wanted it to. So I decided to "release the worldview itself into the wild", and for me, things became more comfortable.

――

I guess that's the hard part of carrying a large project by yourself.

Z

I think that's a problem for every type of series. For instance, I think the "Dragon Quest" series has undergone a lot of changes between the Erdrick trilogy and the Zenithia trilogy[1], and after that, it became better not to connect the worlds appearing between installments. "Dragon Quest XI" is...more like a commemorative plaque than a means of connecting anything.

――

So you and Tasofro are connected in terms of your works?

Z

A number of resources were required for development, and since the main mechanics and the characters' pixel art were newly-made since Hopeless Masquerade, we'd use those for a while to reduce the number of resources required for subsequent productions. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to make new games. But in terms of the shmups, there's not much to worry about. So we had to say that each game was related to the previous one, otherwise we'd have to change up the characters, and we didn't want to do that. The story is different each time, of course.

――

For the shmups, is there any point in time where you'd say the systems underwent radical change?

Z

The only thing I did was implement the spellcard system at the time of EoSD. Of course, if there was a better system, I could just use that, but for Touhou, the value lies in its overall atmosphere and worldview–including the story and characters–so any system would be meaningless if it doesn't fit that worldview. For instance, if puzzle mechanics were involved, the atmosphere would reflect that, and if you needed to collect UFOs, the story would be centered around that. If I put all the focus onto the gameplay system, it may have ended up like a puzzle game.

――

I see.

Z

Another interesting thing about game production is rethinking about how games are made, and Ten Desires was particularly interesting in that regard. What does it mean to make a game? To play a game? What about it would make someone happy? It's easy to conclude that everyone thinks of these things differently, but I wondered about what I saw in the Touhou series when I was working on Ten Desires. I thought that, since the characters in the game were being reborn, that I had to be reborn as well. Though, I actually didn't change all that much, but I feel like I was able to reaffirm my beliefs.

――

That sounds relieving, or maybe not so much...

Z

Around that time, smartphone games were becoming more full-fledged, which made many people think about what a game can be. Some of those people went indie, among other things, but now people don't go out of their way to mention the term "indie". People had lots of thoughts about games, which brings us to where we are today.

――

That may be so.

Z

The Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami occurred while Ten Desires was in development, and that also happened to be a time where I was rethinking plenty of things. Since the Reitaisai got postponed, I was unable to distribute the demo version. Of course, the game's contents have nothing to do with that, but it was a deeply moving work that coincided with a number of events.

――

How do you feel about Hopeless Masquerade, looking back on it now?

Z

I've got nothing to say in terms of mechanics, since that's Tasofro's responsibility, but I don't see any particular change in what I'd do even if the system had been changed. I dare say that the focus is more on the storyline, but I didn't have the freedom to choose the characters. In the beginning, there'd been talks about making Satori playable, but I wasn't sure about how I'd represent her in a fighting game.

――

I see.

Z

HM also became an unintentional rebirth, so I could do anything I wanted with it, but on the other hand, I packed too many things into it and it ended up complicated. However, proposing ideas and then implementing them was a very enjoyable part of the development process. The story and the setting were very close to the mechanics. Of course, one thing I regret is thinking that simply incorporating a system into a project isn't enough to make it interesting. Looking back on it now, I should've put more focus on the "religion" aspect, a realization that was utilized in later works. That kind of thing is hard to appreciate unless you've experienced it firsthand, and I am glad I was able to do so myself.

  1. The Erdrick Trilogy (ロトシリーズ Loto series) refers to the first three installments of the Dragon Quest series, while the Zenithia trilogy (天空シリーズ Castle in the Sky series) refers to the 4th-6th installments.
