Interview

Starting with Immaterial and Missing Power, Tasogare Frontier has released a number of collaborations with Team Shanghai Alice. We asked them about their works so far, as well as for the story of Urban Legend in Limbo's production, from planning to completion.

Tasogare Frontier is a circle that primarily releases derivative doujin software. As ever since they released their first collaboration with Team Shanghai Alice in 2004, the fighting game Touhou Suimusou ~ Immaterial and Missing Power, as Touhou Project 7.5, they've continued to work together on Touhou Hisouten ~ Scarlet Weather Rhapsody (Touhou Project 10.5, released in 2008), Touhou Hisoutensoku ~ Chase the Enigma of the Gargantuan Guignol (Touhou Project 12.3, released in 2009), and Touhou Shinkirou ~ Hopeless Masquerade (Touhou Project 13.5, released in 2013), they are a circle with a deep connection to Team Shanghai Alice. Furthermore, we mustn't forget that due to their technological prowess, they also worked with 07th Expansion to release the fighting game Higurashi Daybreak in 2006, based on the sound novel spawning two anime series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, as well as having it ported to the Playstation Portable to be sold in 2008 by Alchemist. In addition to their collaborations, they also continue to release their own derivative games, mostly based on the Touhou Project.

I would like to hear about how the project for Urban Legend in Limbo came about and how it came into being.

Iruka Unabara ("Una" below from here)

For a long time, I had wanted to make a game with no ground and battles were fought freely in the air with projectiles. I loved the fighting games like Cyberbots (1995, Capcom) and Astra Super Stars (1998, Sunsoft/Tecmo) that strayed a bit from the trajectory of traditional fighters. However, when it comes to making our own game, designing our own characters would set the bar too high for us, so I thought to see if there is a suitable title we can make a derivative work off from. Then I encountered the world of Touhou Project, I thought "Ah, a world where characters throw projectiles and fly through the air, this fits perfectly". From there, we wrapped up the first game we made as a circle, Eternal Fighter Zero (Doujin fighting game with characters from PC game brand Key, by Tasogare Frontier), and went to ZUN-san to ask him "will you let us make a game like this?". That was the birth of Immaterial and Missing Power.

――

But IaMP is more of a normal fighting game, isn't it?

Una

Putting everything we wanted to do in the first game still sets the bar too high. So we first set the stage on a normal fighting game and familiarize the players with a world where people throw barrages of projectiles at each other. Then, after the first 3 games, Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and Touhou Hisoutensoku, we can close that chapter and move on to a greatly revamped fighting game which took the ground away and focused on aerial battles. That was Hopeless Masquerade. We made that, released it, and after taking the reviews and complaints to our hearts, we came up with Urban Legend in Limbo. .

――

I see. So the ideas and hopes for the mechanics you have now were already there since you started your circle.

Una

Yes, what we have now is generally from what I thought up when making IaMP. It finally took shape as a game.

――

You reached your goal after roughly 10 years.

Una

10 years ago we weren't skilled enough making games, we just started out as a doujin circle back then.

――

Well, no, you would have a hard time convincing people that EFZ was actually Tasogare Frontier's first game. But those first 3 games also took a long time, didn't they?

Una

That's right. When developing a game, it's one thing if it's a single player game, but a multiplayer game can change like a living creature as the players learn and exchange information, so it takes time for the game to mature. Meanwhile, we also hone the game to match that process, and develop it like a sequel.

――

So that's how the long-awaited Hopeless Masquerade with a renewed gameplay mechanic came about, and through releasing that and taking in the feedback from players you've made the even more polished Urban Legend in Limbo.

Una

When we made HM, we just threw in everything we wanted to do and see what happens. And from there, we referred to our experience with the games we made with feet on the ground, and made sure we're heading in the direction of what we wanted the game to achieve.

――

So we talked about how the gameplay mechanics came to be, what about the collaboration?

Una

First, it's simply telling ZUN-san what we wanted to make in the new game. Then we decide on the keyword that represents the whole game. For example, HM had "popularity" and "religion". ZUN-san comes up with the game's theme and the general mechanics, but he leaves everything about the details of the game mechanics to us. When we felt like making the next game after HM, we discussed what it would be about with ZUN-san. During that, the words "urban legends" and "occult" came up.

――

Then from there you started with tying the keywords with the gameplay mechanics? Speaking of which, ZUN-san said "A fighting game without something to fight for isn't a game. So we made the occult balls move around ." He also said "normal fighting games are nice since they only need to deal with the general stuff as long as they can be played in tournaments." (laugh)

Una

Ahaha (laugh). After that, we pick the characters corresponding to those keywords. ZUN-san writes the relation between the characters and the story, and our team focuses on making the game interesting, that's how we split it. This time, ZUN-san decided on the order of how the story is released, it's designed so that it can be enjoyed as a series of reading material as well.

――

Was it not so strictly decided before this? I felt that SWR's character stories proceeded in a rather complicated timeline.

Una

That's because we had too many characters. We had characters that were heavily involved with the main story and those who weren't. But even the characters who weren't involved with the main story provide a different perspective to the incident. That's how we made it. While we were discussing with ZUN-san, we also brought up that it might be better to just have characters who are involved with the story, but ZUN-san said let's make a story for everyone.

――

You have commissioned various circles for the music this time.

Una

The stance we take as a circle is that we're responsible for our own parts and we're free to do whatever want for those. Even though Akiyama Uni is the one responsible for the music, we let him decide who to make which tracks as long as the game gets finished and he puts together the tracks and makes adjustments to them.

――

Moe Harukawa-san is responsible for the main character portraits, how did this come to be?

Una

It's because our usual illustrator alphes-san couldn't do it this time. We worried about who to ask, since we decided within the circle that if we had to change the art then it had to be someone who would be accepted by the fanbase. So we discussed with one of the artists of the official works, Harukawa-san, who gave us her ready consent. She really helped us out this time.

――

The character dialogue combined with Harukawa-san's art presented like a manga was quite impressive. I'd say it felt convincing.

Una

Having the character's art when using the ultimate skill is a brush-up from Hopeless Masquerade, but for the character conversations, that was U2-san's idea. Even though Harukawa-san's coloured illustrations are wonderful, her black-and-white art has a special atmosphere to it, or should it say, very characteristic. He was obsessed about having her art represented in black and white like if it was in a manga, so we went with it.

――

How hard was it to make Urban Legend in Limbo?

Una

Even though I said it was a brush-up, we did almost everything from scratch, so it took more time than expected. We underestimated the time costs. Because of that, the balancing was unpolished when it first came out...we will continue to work on that as it is our responsibility. When this interview is out, I expect a big update to be released by then, so please look forward to it.

――

Do you think there is a big difference between making a simple derivative game and a collaboration?

Una

Collaborations are released as official works, so ZUN-san takes care of the things the characters do, so they act recklessly but still within the bounds of the Touhou world so they don't feel strange. And their expressions had to be based on the ones they had made in the past or those that fit with their image. When we're working on our own, we almost always start with "if this character does this then it'd be interesting". We'd be like "I want to make a game with an interesting mechanic, and if it's Touhou, we give those mechanics to the appropriate character, and people who know would smile", and we'd play around and have fun making it. When we're making it official we have to be serious and careful. When we're not, a weight is lifted off our shoulders, that's the big difference.

――

Well, no [other] circle does both.

Una

It's because we make them alternately that we can see certain things, I think. We can have the thinking "if we make a game with this kind of content, then we can show this side of the character", and when we work collaboratively we make new findings from the resources sent to us. Then on our next game that we make by ourselves, we can reflect this new side of the character.

――

Since in ULiL the boss character made people go "hey, is it alright to have this character out?" (laugh)

Una

When we first got the proposal we were surprised too (laugh). "Is this okay?" we asked.

――

We didn't even have a new CD for the Secret Sealing Club series for quite some time now.

Una

It has some clear connections with Touhou, but there really wasn't a chance to talk about them until now. That said, we only have the character out, and strictly speaking, they're not the exactly same, so maybe there's no connection after all? I couldn't settle my suspicions myself. (laugh)

――

Ahaha (laugh).

Una

Though many people have asked us "since you're on the maker's side, you should know some info that's not out in the open yet, right?", we don't know anything other than the things we know from playing the games (laugh). When the new game Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom came out, we had no idea it was connected with the occult ball story. We first knew from ZUN's blog. We went, "the game we made was actually a stepping stone for the next game!?" So, without us knowing it, we collaborated on a game with various stones set in place, it surprises us. If we knew, we could have represented it differently, but we also like this feeling of surprise.

――

There are spell cards that are common to the original shooting games and the fighting games collaborations with you, Tasogare-san.

Una

For the bosses' spell cards, we make the moves and ZUN-san gives the names. In the Touhou Bunkachou games [Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler], where many characters make their appearances, to have spell cards that debuted in fighting games shown as danmaku really surprises us in how it's interpreted, and the happiness from seeing it sure is something else.

――

You stimulate each other.

Una

It's nice if that's true. If I can stimulate him just a little by not being a passive listener, then I consider it as repayment for his favour of associating with us.

――

I think that even though ZUN-san develops games by himself, he's quite fond of fellow game developer friends.

Una

All in all, we have fun when talking about game development. When we talk to each other, he gets really excited about beer, of course, and also about making future games. He is a man with his own vision. Getting fan games sold on the PlayStation platform this time is one facet of that.

――

Does Tasogare-san have any plans to participate in "Play, Doujin!" ?

Una

Nothing settled for now.

――

I see. What plans do you have as a circle from now on?

Una

I want to say that we'll do our best for whatever we'll be making, but for better or for worse, we are a doujin organization.... In some sense, ULiL closes a chapter for us because we made a fighting game that we had wanted to make, so what we'll be doing next is looking for our next ideal. To think that we had one plan fulfilled after 10 years, we are satisfied.

――

Then have you found the ideal you can chase after for the next 10 years?

Una

Well, we want to refuel and get stimulated.

――

What advice can you give to people who are starting to participate in doujin activities, Unabara-san?

Una

If you want to do it, then first try making something you can do. Make it have form, and then look at it. If you just "want to do it" and get stuck developing the idea, the ideal will become too lofty and you won't be able to make it, and you'll end up having your urge to make something depleted. Look not at your ideal but in yourself, build up the things that you can do realistically, and you'll come closer to your ideal. Other than that, just remember the feeling of time catching up to you.

――

Like having a deadline you can't escape from?

Una

Like applying to Comiket and the such. Then divide the time, be aware of the time you've set for yourself, and filter out what you can do within that time. Once you get used to doing that, then you can choose what you can do and what you must do for that time. By doing that, you'll improve your skill in giving things form. Once you have something done, there will be reviews and critics. But those will be connected to step you take next.

――

Being a director is about continually making decisions, huh.

Una

There were times we had to cut a few baggage loose because we had things we want to do.

――

Any messages to the players of Tasogare-san's games?

Una

I get nervous at these. People who like the Touhou Project range from those who started by playing the games, of course, and those who came from the music, anime, art, and the various things. We work especially hard making the characters move so that they'd be liked by these people, so please enjoy the game whether as a single player game with ZUN's story or as a multiplayer fighting communication tool. We will be improving on that aspect as well, so please look forward to it, thank you.
