The Highest of Native Gods | |
Moriya Suwako | Suwako Moriya | |
Ability: The ability to create earthliness[1] | |
Threat level: Low | |
Human friendship level: Medium | |
Main place of activity: Youkai Mountain, Geyser Center, etc. | |
| A mysterious god residing at the Moriya Shrine. In contrast with Kanako Yasaka, she doesn't come out of the shrine often. | |
| Unlike Kanako, she is one of the myriad gods. She does not have a spirit as a base form, and instead consists of pure faith. Therefore, it is believed that she is the one who would be more troubled by losing all faith, rather than Kanako. | |
| However, Kanako and the shrine maiden, Sanae Kochiya, carry out the duties of gathering faith. She doesn't come forth of her own volition often. Whether it is because she is bad at marketing faith by herself or some other reason is one of the mysteries of the Moriya Shrine. | |
| She has the power to control curse gods. When the Moriya Shrine came from the outside world, the curse gods came along with it. It sounds troublesome but since manipulating curse gods is her blessing, we must bear with it. If you don't want to be cursed, you have no choice but to worship her.(*1) | |
| Like most gods, she normally tends to take a human form. However, like all gods, the form she adopts is mostly meaningless. When a portion of her spirit is enshrined elsewhere, she often takes the form of a frog, and in those circumstances it seems she can grant blessings of safe travel (Safety Frog: makes you return safely), financial upturn (Fortune Frog: makes you able to buy soon), or transfiguration (Beauty Frog: makes you look better than ever).[3] | |
| At first glance, her personality seems genial, but it's difficult to tell what she's thinking. Unlike Kanako, she acts if she was clueless which would be problematic when dealing with her. | |
Ability | |
---|---|---|
| By cooperating with Kanako she can change the terrain as well as open holes to the underground. Despite saying "cooperating", it seems that the terrain shifting is mainly Suwako's doing. | |
| Rather than directly leveling the terrain, it seems she sends the curse gods under her control. | |
| Not only can she change the terrain, she can also freely make the soil more fertile for growing grains, or curse the soil to prevent even weeds from growing on it.(*2) | |
Curse Gods | |
| The true identity of the curse gods she took with her are native gods of the outside world called Lord Mishaguchi. Native gods are gods that are only worshiped in a limited region. When they are separated from their land, they lose their faith, but within their area, it's not uncommon for them to have more power than wide-ranging (and perhaps even the highest level of) gods. | |
| As the curse gods are native gods, Suwako is also a native god. It seems slightly unnatural for a native god to abandon their homeland and come to Gensokyo, but compared to being forgotten in the outside world where faith is running thin, it was likely preferable to start over and gather faith in a new land. | |
| Incidentally, the curse gods under her command are even more mysterious than her. Taking a form like serpents made of stone, grains sprout in their wake wherever they pass, but it is said that the inside of their mouths shines with a red glow, and their breath turns the land barren. | |
| Although they are called curse gods, in actuality they possess the dual nature of harvest gods, so as long as you mind your manners you won't be cursed. | |
Countermeasures | |
| Because it is harder to tell what she's thinking than Kanako, it would be best to be just a bit wary. | |
| However, it's unlikely that she'll suddenly eat you. | |
| While a common misunderstanding as she is often thought to be in the form of a frog, be aware that she is not actually a goddess of frogs. | |
| If you happen to make a request like "The frogs in the rice fields are so noisy that I can't sleep, could you do something about it?", she might make your fields barren. | |
| It seems like she simply loves frogs. | |
| 1: This is a hard-selling of faith.[4] | |
| 2: And that's how they threaten others to gather faith. The one doing the threatening is Kanako. |

- ↑ The specific term used is 坤, kūn (kon in Japanese) or "Field", which is one of the hexagrams of the I Ching, and is symbolically related to the concept of Earth or Dì in Taoist philosophy and religion.
すぐかえる (Sugukaeru: can buy soon). (Michigaeru: look better)
- ↑ The last word-play is quite a bit more technical; the first two "kaeru" are puns of "kaeru" (frog, 蛙) and the "kaeru" (帰る and 買える), but the last "gaeru" — the variant of "kaeru" — is a part of "mi-chigaeru" (look better, 見違える). The literal meaning is "look different" or "mistake sb1 for sb2", originally shortend from "michigaeru hodo ni" (as sb looks different)
- ↑ The "hard-selling of faith" (信仰の押し売り shinkou no oshiuri) is ZUN's neologism from "a hard-selling of kindness (親切の押し売り shinsetsu no oshiuri)).
