Talk:Big Four of the Mountain
Something very questionable about "Devas of the Mountain"
This is probably a term invented on this Touhou wiki. The word "deva" probably came from an attempt to translate 四天王 which refer to the actual four devas in Buddhism. Perhaps something that was misunderstood is that the word 四天王 is actually a more general word. It means, more generally, "the big four," whether the four are related to devas or not. For examples, it can be used to refer to the four sacred animals, about whom it certainly cannot be said that they are devas.
Please see this page on the whole variety of ways 四天王 is used in ways completely unrelated to devas.
Similarly, Shuten Douji and the others certainly cannot be said to be "devas."
I propose moving this page to Shuten Douji (or something like that) and furthermore, taking it off the bestiary template.--Tosiaki 09:06, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Shuten Douji (酒呑童子, shuutendouji) aka leader, chief, head type oni. It would be still considered a title type category since it can still be viewed as a status. --Hikaruxz 09:27, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- If you are talking about what Shuten Douji means, Shuten Douji is a name of a specific oni, not a title. Shuten Douji may have been leading four other oni, but there is no title commonly ascribed to Shuten Douji - Shuten Douji is simply commonly known as such, "Shuten Douji."--Tosiaki 09:36, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Furthermore, there is no common title ascribed to Shuten Douji and the others. The most usual way to describe them all collectively are generic phrases like "Shuten Douji and his four subordinates."--Tosiaki 09:39, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Alright since i've only seen him as one entiy in fictional works. I'm also thinking right now if all the title should just be put in other since almost all of the titles the youkai have are in others being non-youkai specific. --Hikaruxz 09:46, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I am not sure myself, although I find it silly that the Three Fairies of Light are even in this template in the first place. One might as well put in "Prismriver Sisters" in there if it is like that.--Tosiaki 09:57, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
