It's there in the original to introduce the topic, it's just the translation doesn't preserve the word order because it sounds more natural this way in English (to me, at least). If there was already another god in the shrine, would that mean Kanako had freely given it up?

The meaning seems wrong, considering the EX-scenario,

'Could it be that there is another god in the shrine already, and Kanako can't use it freely?'
