Afterword
...And now, just as I've finished compiling a good number of typical Spell Card examples, the tea is ready. There are still many more Spell Cards that I've seen, but I think I'll take a break and organize my thoughts for a bit.
Research can't start without thinking. Listing and organizing your material is important, but to turn that into something you can use yourself, you've got to give it a good, long think.
First, I'll explain what the term "Spell Card" means. Spell Cards are a set of rules that turn fights to the death into games to enjoy; the point is to keep your power moderately in check, and show off your skills to each other. Because it's a game, every participant's abilities, memories, and ways of thinking are vividly expressed. That's why even just watching a Spell Card battle can be entertaining.
It's not an exaggeration to say that by observing someone's Spell Cards, you can tell what kind of person they are.
Now, when talking about Spell Cards, it's essential to explain the difference between the theatrical type and other types.
A "theatrical type" is a Spell Card that prioritizes visual aesthetics over attacking. Although this book doesn't follow a strict classification, any attacks I felt could be used for leisure without an opponent are classified as theatrical types.
Like "Danmaku Barrier" and "Imperishable Shooting", most theatrical types tend to heavily reflect the user's abilities, so they're fun to watch.
These kinds of danmaku are created precisely because Spell Cards are for play. If you were purely trying to annihilate the enemy, theatrical danmaku would be complete nonsense.
Next, let's look at other types of danmaku besides theatrical.
Slave-types make something other than yourself shoot. Dolls, phantoms, and sometimes even other youkai are used as the slaves.
Many of these Spell Cards have a wider range of attack, and they're quite cost-effective, but they require a high level of skill from the user. I'm still in the middle of researching this type, myself.
Stress types severely limit the freedom of the opponent. They include many varieties such as sight and motion, as well as compound varieties that combine more than one.
Because of that, the actual attacks tend to be quite simple. As long as you don't give in to the pressure around you, they're easy.
Bug types are danmaku of random showers of random colors. An overload of colors often means that they aren't very pretty. Weak beings tend to use these a lot.
There are others, like doping types which increase one's own physical strength, fractal types which maintain a specific shape, and a number of other patterns.
Constructing danmaku under the rules of Spell Cards may seem to limit one's freedom, but it's actually the opposite. If you have no restrictions, then you're able to do anything, but at the same time, everyone immediately seeks the most optimum design. Nobody makes any unnecessary variations.
If you're free to do anything, then you just have to use "the most efficient, most effective attack possible".
In terms of danmaku, you'd just have to use attacks with as few gaps as possible, or shoot the fastest, largest bullets possible. You'd probably be unable to call that danmaku at all.
Therefore, in a world without rules, danmaku would be nonsense.
Now then, you've seen Spell Cards from a wide variety of humans and youkai, but I'd like you to read this book and consider what kind of danmaku I happen to be fond of. Then again, I'm not actually sure as to whether I'll make this book public, of course.
