The Last Comer/Characters

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Most of the characters in The Last Comer are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. The following three are, however, officially part of the Touhou Project and are playable characters in The Last Comer, each with three different shot types. With exception, the rest below are the originals.

Reimu Hakurei
Shrine Maiden of the Sun

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

The same well-known Shrine Maiden as every time before. The shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.

Borrowing the power of Amaterasu-Oomikami, she was suppressing the Morning Star. If the star which acts as a symbol of the night shines brighly in the middle of the day, the youkai who depend on darkness in Gensokyo would gain strength. To the Shrine Maiden, whose occupation is the extermination of Youkai, there is no situation as inconvenient as this. The Hakurei Shrine maiden who long ago solved a very incident-like incident so splendidly, will now show her magnificence. The Offertory box that took in nothing but rain water and dust was sufficient reason for her to get serious.

Marisa Kirisame
Witch of the Starry Sky

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

The ordinary witch living in Gensokyo. She has a habit of collecting things.

To Marisa, the fact that the Morning Star was shining so brightly was not that serious of an event. More then that, the meteorite which had fallen within her reach pulled strongly on her interest as a collector of rare articles. With Gensokyo cut off from the outside world, and her vigorous thirst for knowledge, objects that sometimes come in from the outside world were like a gift from God. [In comparison to that, this was surely a great incident that would shake Gensokyo.]

--

Sakuya Izayoi
Head Maid of the Full Moon

Sakuya Izayoi
Playable Character

The Scarlet Devil Mansion's elegant Servant. Due to the orders of her master Remilia Scarlet, she rises up to solve an incident for the first time in a long time.

To Remilia, who lives in the night, the shining Morning Star was something that should be welcomed. Therefore, Sakuya received orders to stand in the way of the shrine maiden and her friends who sought to take back the world of day and light. "So, 'The danger is past and God is forgotten' is something like this." Even though she dared to think this way, she stayed silent. Even if things are left as they are, the truth of the incident must be ascertained. That's because this incident won't necessarily bring darkness to Gensokyo. To the girl who could manipulate time, reading the future was the one thing she couldn't do.

--

Marry Shepherd (メリーシェパード) is the stage one boss.

Concept[edit]

Marry Shepherd is a fairy based on sheep, with several design features reminiscent of a sheep’s wool coat. Her role in the story is loosely inspired by the Book of Revelation, where a “Lamb having seven horns and seven eyes” initiates the end of the world.

Name

Marry is a very uncommon variant of “Mary”, and carries the same connotation of “sea of bitterness” or “rebelliousness”. Shepherd relates to Marry’s ability to command flocks of sheep. Her full name might be a reference to Mary Shepard, the illustrator of Mary Poppins.

Appearance

Marry has green eyes, long, cream-colored hair stylized like wool, and a red bow on her head. She wears a white blouse with red trimmings on the sleeves and a short, orange dress with wool lining the hem. She has wool wristbands and a thin, red string tied around her neck. Her knee-length bloomers are visible from beneath the skirt, and she wears a small, white apron with a red bow tied around her back. Marry has white socks and red shoes with small puffs of wool on top.

Story[edit]

In Stage 1, Marry is looking for one of her lost sheep in the burning forest. The heroines encounter her and do battle with her, and Marry finds the lost sheep soon afterwards.

It is later revealed in the game that Marry is actually a significant cause of the incident. She stole the holy Book of Revelations as a prank and opened its seals, bringing the apocalypse upon Gensokyo.

Corin Charite (コリン・シャーリット) is the stage two boss.

Concept[edit]

Corin Charite is based on European vampires. Her visual design and attacks are further inspired by Remilia Scarlet, the final boss of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

Name

Corin is a French name of Latin origin meaning "spear", complementing her use of the magical Irish spear Gáe Bolg. It may also be a corruption of "Corinth", as a reference to Goethe's poem The Bride of Corinth; the poem is referenced in the title of her theme music, Philinion's Resurrection, as well. Charite is the French word for “charity”, perhaps relating to her distaste toward hunting humans for their blood.

Appearance

Corin has red eyes and green hair, which she keeps tied into a braid. She wears a pink hat with a wide brim and a pink and white dress with a black corset around her midsection, and she has two large, black bat wings on her back. She also wears black shoes with short, white socks. Corin has three yellow ribbons tied around her hat, hair braid, and neck, and she carries a closed, yellow umbrella with her.

Story[edit]

Because of her distaste of human blood and under the realization that such a distaste would not allow her to survive in the outside world, Corin moved into Gensokyo to live with Remilia in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. When she was just nearing the Mansion, the heroines encounter her at the Misty Lake that has now turned wine-colored, thinking that Corin had caused its unnatural color.

Concept[edit]

Phiased Pescar is based on the Magi, ancient astrologers who specialized in predicting the future by tracking the motions of the planets, particularly on the biblical Three Wise Men who visited Jesus Christ shortly after his birth.

Name

Her surname Pescar can mean literally "to fish" in Portuguese, Spanish and other languages derived from latin, which may derive from the fish being a symbol of Jesus. It is also an anagram of Casper, one of the three biblical magi. From the way it's written in Japanese, it could also be romanized as Pascal, possibly referring to the mathematician and theologist Blaise Pascal, Saint Pascal or the lunar crater named Pascal.

Story[edit]

Mumumu Mikaboshi (甕星 無々夢 Mikaboshi Mumumu) is the stage four boss.

Concept[edit]

Mumumu Mikaboshi is based on Ame no Kagaseo, a Shinto god of evil, as well as the fallen angel Lucifer.

Name

Despite sounding as three repeating syllables, Mumumu is written with distinct kanji (無々夢). The first part of her name (無) means “nothingness”, while the third (夢) means “dream”. The “々” is a punctuation mark indicating to repeat the previous kanji, emphasizing the “nothingness” aspect. Thus, her given name can be taken as “dreaming of oblivion”, relating to her penchant for orchestrating demise. Also, the kanji for “six“ can be pronounced as Mu, making her name phonetically identical to the number 666. Her surname Mikaboshi (甕星) is from “Amatsu-Mikaboshi”, or “August Star of Heaven”, another name for Ame no Kagaseo.

Appearance

Mumumu has red eyes and long, red hair. As she is a demon, she naturally has pointy ears, two small horns on her head, and black wings on her back. She also has a noticeably darker skin tone than the average Touhou character. Mumumu wears a black, sleeveless kimono with torn edges, red trimmings, and a burnt orange highlight along the bottom edges, as well as a sarashi across her chest. She keeps a white scarf tied around her neck, a purplish-brown scarf wrapped around her arms, and a red scarf tied to her waist. She has a short, red skirt and brown boots, with two black belts fastened around each of the latter. Mumumu wears knee-high socks with red bands near the top to secure them in place, and she has two torn, black cloths around her wrists secured in a similar fashion. During her Spell Card attacks, she is seen manipulating three fireballs in the shape of the number 6, alluding to the number 666.

Story[edit]

As the star fell into Gensokyo, Mumumu's power was "released". To validate the apocalypse given in the Book of Revelations, she went to Gensokyo to prepare for the battle with Iesua and her army of angels.

Michel Sant'Angelo (ミシェル・サンタンジェ) is the stage five boss.

Concept[edit]

Michel Sant’Angelo is based on the Archangel Michael, the highest-ranking angel in Heaven and the commander of God’s forces during the final fight against Satan.

Name

Michel is a given name of French origin. It is normally a masculine name equivalent to the English name “Michael”, but in this case it is pronounced similarly to the feminine variant “Michelle”. Both versions of the name mean “Who is like God?”, a rhetorical question that illustrates humility before God. Sant’Angelo is Italian for “holy angel”, and it references a former mausoleum in Rome called Castel Sant’Angelo, where the Archangel Michael is rumored to have once appeared.

Appearance

Michel has red eyes and tan, shoulder-length hair with blue ribbons tied to the sides. She wears a stylized blue dress, which has gold trimmings, lighter blue shoulders, a brown brick pattern along the hem, and two angled crosses at the front corners of the skirt. The underside of the skirt consists of a white, frilly layer. Michel also wears brown boots with white socks. The front of her dress contains two white sections, split by a brown and gold belt, with orange and yellow triangular patterns depicting the rays of the Sun, along with brown buttons lining one side. Michel wears a red scarf with a small, yellow Sun on one end around her neck, and she has two majestic, feathery white wings. She holds in her hands a faintly glowing sword with a golden hilt.

Story[edit]

Following Iesua's commands, Michel and the other angels build an angel fortress on the Youkai Mountain. There, Michel and the other angels prepare for the final fight against Mumumu. However, the heroines are told by Mumumu that Iesua and her angels are the greater threat, and they begin climbing the mountain and the fortress. As they ascend, they battle Michel who rushes to stop them before they reach Iesua.

Relationships[edit]

Janet is Michel's subordinate.

Iesua Nazarenus

Michel's top priority is to protect Iesua and follow all of her commands. Michel also shares Iesua's last Spell Card.

The Greatest Salvation

Iesua Nazarenus (イシュア・ナザレヌス) is the stage six boss.

Concept[edit]

Iesua Nazarenus is based on Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish teacher who lived and preached in Israel during the reigns of Roman Emperors Augustus and Tiberius, and who Christians believe to be the Son of God.

Name

Iesua Nazarenus is a slight corruption of “Iesus Nazarenus”, Latin for “Jesus the Nazarene”. Iesua is also visually similar to Yeshua, the Hebrew version of Jesus’ name.

Appearance

Iesua has red eyes and short, bluish-gray hair. She wears a dark green headband with pointed decorations, referencing the Crown of Thorns that Jesus was forced to wear. Also on the headband is a pink rose, a flower often associated with Jesus’ mother Mary. Iesua wears a white, long-sleeved shirt as well as a four-layered, white and blue ankle-length skirt, each containing dark green trimmings. She has a cyan bow and a red cloak attached to her neck, the latter of which she normally holds closed with her left hand, as well as black shoes with gray socks that go up to at least her knees. Iesua wears bandages over her hands, forehead, and right eye, mirroring the wounds Jesus suffered from his trial and crucifixion. Lastly, she holds a large wooden cross on her back, which shines a brilliant white during battle.

Story[edit]

When Iesua saw the star fall into Gensokyo, she knew that Mumumu would be there. She moved into Gensokyo with Michel and built a fortress for the angel army on the top of the Youkai Mountain. Her mission was to forgive Mumumu, retrieve the soul of Judas Iscariot from Mumumu, and forgive everyone that she could along the way.

Elfin Mint (エルフィン ミント) is the extra stage boss.

Concept[edit]

Elfin Mint is a fairy based on Menthe, a Greek nymph who was transformed into a mint plant for trying to seduce Hades.

Name

Elfin means “like an elf”, relating to part of her race, but can also mean “small” or “mischievous”, matching the typical description of fairies in Gensokyo. Mint is an aromatic plant commonly used as an herb.

Appearance

Elfin has red eyes, blue hair, and pointy ears. She wears a fuchsia headband with two larger ribbons attached to the sides, as well as a fuchsia string around her neck. She has a light green and white dress with a fuchsia belt and matching bands around the ends of her sleeves. She doesn’t wear shoes, but she has two silver bracelets around her left ankle as well as two more on her right wrist. Elfin has four white, angular wings, portions of which seem to float separate from her body. Accompanying Elfin is a small, spherical, light red creature with a scowling face, two bat wings, and tall hair.

Story[edit]

The star that fell into Gensokyo was Hades; he fell to the Earth because humanity has finally forgotten about him. Elfin, a close companion to Hades that has been separated from him for decades, went into Gensokyo and covered the Forest of Magic (where Hades landed) in mint plants, sending a calming scent throughout Gensokyo. The heroines, troubled by the sudden, unnaturally calm atmosphere, travel to the forest to investigate, find Elfin as the cause, and engage in a danmaku duel with her.
