From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This game has many, many references, so the attempt to actually list them is quite grand, but list them we shall!*

*This goes without saying, but spoilers galore!

Menu (At beginning of the game)

Description- Junya Itoi

Location- Beginning of Menu screen

Reference- Touhou,Earthbound/Mother

Explanation- "Junya" is actually ZUN's first name!

Itoi is the last name of Shigesato Itoi who created the EarthBound/Mother series!

Overworld

Description- Reimu is silent...

Location- Anywhere, but after you clear the game.

Reference- Some RPGs and games.

Explanation- This is reminiscent to the three of the Mother series' main characters, which is silent most of the time. Most silent main characters used in games that you can name the character yourself and doesn't have any official names (some exception like Mother series, Ys series, Zelda series, Pokemon series, etc). It's very rare for a character that his/her name is not alterable in game to not be able to talk at all... (Most noticeably, Ys series. Adol Chistin can't have his name changed, but never talks)

Description- The Hakurei Shrine box is empty.

Location- Hakurei Shrine

Reference- Touhou Fandom, Official

Explanation- A long running gag for the Touhou fanbase is that no matter what time of time, the donation box is always, always empty. This gag occurs officially, where Reimu's shrine is mostly almost never visited by anyone due much Youkai came to the shrine.

Description- Reimu's tiredness reminds Marisa of Yukari (Or vice versa)

Location- Beginning of game, Hakurei Shrine

Location- Beginning of Game, Hakurei Shrine

Description- Let's visit Yuka. You game?

Location- Beginning of game, Hakurei Shrine

Reference- Earthbound/Mother, Rambo games

Explanation- Even though you are given a choice, "Yes" is the only answer you can give if you want the game to begin!

Description- "Well, clearly you're NOT game if you won't let the plot advance!"

Location- Beginning of game, Hakurei Shrine

Reference- Breaking the fourth wall

Explanation- Oh snap! Marisa has broken the 4th Wall! In case you don't know, the "4th Wall" is when a video game/comic/movie/etc. character speaks directly to the audience. For example, if Marisa told you to get off your lazy bum and exercise, she broke the 4th wall, because she not telling the people around her, but you, behind the T.V/Computer /Comic screen. This is reminiscent of the Mother series as well, where some NPCs just slipped to talk about the players (Swirling screen, etc), hence, broke the 4th wall.

Description- Suwako's hat!

Location- Various save points

Reference- Earthbound/Mother series Touhou

Location- Near Meteor crash site.

Reference- Don't worry about the effects. ...For now, at least.

Description- "Ze"

Location- Pretty much anywhere

Reference- Touhou Fandom, Official

Explanation- For whatever reason, Marisa adds "ze" to the end of her sentences. It's her trademark of talking (at least in Touhou universe. This catchphrase is a little common to use through out Japanese stories' dialogues, including Touhou. You can commonly read this at most of Marisa's end of sentences, if it's untranslated. Most translations just eliminate the "ze" part, since it's not fitting for English speaking...)

Description- "...I just wanted some Marisa to be in my bed at night. It makes me happy."

Location- Patchy's room, SDM

Reference- Touhou Fandom, Official?, Relationshipping

Explanation- A running gag is that Marisa has a lot of girls crushing on her, and it's not that she doesn't know but it's because, Marisa is... well, Marisa. Maybe it's because she has more important things on her mind... like stealing Patchy's books! Now, I'll pull another reference that both RPG fans and Touhou fans like doing which is matchmaking and this is no exception to the Touhou universe. Thing is, almost all are female, and this coined the term "Everyone in Gensokyo is gay." aka relationshipping. Strangely this is not at all weird, in fact, it's kinda cute... Anyway, if you pay attention enough, you'll see a yellow bed not only in Patchy's room, but in other houses!

Description- "Oh, there's a scrap of paper here. ...It says "Porky."

Location- After beating Masked Maid Girl

Reference- Earthbound/Mother

Reference- Mother/Earthbound

Explanation- Ness is known to have this. Reimu can use this, worthlessly.

  • α: Supposedly gives you a little refreshment for a slight while. However, it doesn't actually do anything, apart from displaying one of two messages (randomly chosen). In the original Mother series, this PK blinds opponents, making them hit the players less often. S-chan must be too lazy to do the blind state.

Description- Even In Your Mother Game (F.O.E!)

Location- Yukari's Space

Reference- Etrian Odyssey series, Sekaijuu no Meikyuu series, Iosys, Touhou fandom.

Explanation- It's a F.O.E.! (Foedus Obrepit Errabundus in EN version. Field-On Enemy in JP version). It had this nasty habit of sneaking up on you and attacking when you are seriously weakened, and they're often far stronger than the players. Not in this game, at least. Note that this might be a translator's license, and is in fact just Kedama, the minor Touhou enemy that is often compared to F.O.E. Their popularity of nastiness rises thanks to Iosys's song, F.O.E. The arranger must be hated F.O.E.s that much. And on the same part, Iosys is very well known to make Touhou musics arrangement with lyrics like Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. This is why F.O.E. exists in Touhou fandom.
