Comment
Translation
Aya: No, I think the shape of a sextant certainly looks like a crossbow.
Hatate: It's totally not supposed to go zap 'n zap, though.
Tobiko: As you'd expect, the doctor living in Youkai Mountain is tough!
Momiji: (You guys constantly barge in uninvited for persistent interviews...)

(Shukusei "Betsurehemu Shimyurēta")
Divination Star "Bethlehem Simulator"
Owner
Phiased Pescar
Level 4 — 2
Comment
Translation
Aya: It seems she's calculating the next time the Christmas Star is going to appear.
Hatate: Like, the one at the top of the Christmas tree? Is it that important?
Tobiko: In my- err, Marisa's interpretation, it's when she became a great immortal magician.
Momiji: (Actually, the star signaled the birth of Iesua...)

Spell Card 4 - 3
"Tarot Wild Dance -All-Color Hybrid Deck-"
Owner
Phiased Pescar
Level 4 — 3
Comment
Translation
Aya: A bunch of spell cards used for a duel is called a deck in the Outside World.
Hatate: But there are like, rules about the number of cards in a deck, like 40 or 60.
Tobiko: It appears many people from the Outside World are good at strategizing with spells.
Momiji: (And fighting with luck and money instead of danmaku. But I don't know what that means...)

Spell Card 4 - 4
(Ningyō "Kurisutaru Hakka Dōru")
Dolls "Crystal Hakka Dolls" [2]
Owner
Elfin Mint
Level 4 — 4
Comment
Translation
Aya: Her crystal wings seem to grow more everyday, but the tip gradually becomes old and falls off.
Hatate: The broken crystals from the wings then grow further and multiply.
Tobiko: The mint's formidable reproductive power is a symbol of having numerous children.
Momiji: (Those crystals could be made into good luck charms and sold...)

Spell Card 4 - 5
(Zakuro "Akumade Kajitsu")
Pomegranate "Devilishly Bitter Fruit" [3]
Owner
Elfin Mint
Level 4 — 5
Comment
Translation
Aya: The small fruit is said to be a guard sent from the queen of the underworld.
Hatate: I heard it's alright to shoot it down since it revives every time.
Tobiko: Despite its incompetent appearance, it's ultimately a praiseworthy devil.
Momiji: (Devilishly bitter, I say, I definitely say...)

Spell Card 4 - 6
"Mint-full Power Plant" [4]
Owner
Elfin Mint
Level 4 — 6
Comment
Translation
Aya: It seems she tried to imitate Magakimi's "Minstrel Power Plant".
Hatate: That huge laser only stays for, like, barely any time.
Tobiko: It seems that the difficulty is maintained by increasing the number of normal bullets as the radiation power weakens.
Momiji: (In short, the lasers are meaningless aside from presentation, it's a waste of energy...)

Spell Card 4 - 7
(Tejina "Tonjū no Jutsu")
Conjuring "Beast-Swallowing Art" [5]
Owner
Tobiko Takatou
Level 4 — 7
Comment
Translation
Aya: What kind of trick is this, to grow bigger by eating beasts?
Hatate: Based on the double meaning of "bovine", wouldn't it be poetic if you got slower as well?[6]
Tobiko: Even if wordplay is a valuable skill, I wouldn't want to disadvantage myself, would I?
Momiji: (Unusual, but you're right, spell names aren't supposed to be a contest of technical skills...)

Spell Card 4 - 8
(Hensha "Tengu no Bagu Shattā")
Transforming Photo[7] "Tengu's Bug Shutter" [8]
Owner
Tobiko Takatou
Level 4 — 8
Comment
Translation
Aya: Is it a trick that pops out bugs from the space erased by her shots?
Hatate: With gross tastes like bugs, you really were originally a middle-aged uncle.
Tobiko: I-in my interpretation, err, "shutter bug" just means an avid photographer, y-yeah.
Momiji: (Saying it means a bugged shutter would've been a better excuse...)

Spell Card 4 - 9
(Sanrensha "Torai Fōkasā")
Triple Rapid Shot "Tri Focuser"
Owner
Tobiko Takatou
Level 4 — 9
Comment
Translation
Aya: Why, how cheeky to give a spell a name like that.
Hatate: What the heck, isn't Tobiko's camera bad at continuous shooting?
Tobiko: If you can't do a Triple Rapid Shot with only one camera, just use three at once.
Momiji: (What you just said sounds so wasteful if it's anything like a pistol...)

Notes[edit]

  1. Possible reference to Link's Crossbow Training, a video game that made use of the Wii Zapper attachment.
  2. Pun on hakka (薄荷, mint) and the anime series Hacka Doll.
  3. Originally akumade kajitsu ("Merely A Fruit"), as a pun on akumade (merely) and akuma (devil).
  4. "ミント増える" (minto-fueru, lit. "mint-increasing"): a pun on Mitama Magahara's Spell Card "Minstrel Power Plant".
  5. A reference to "呑牛の術" (cow-swallowing art,) a conjuring trick allegedly performed by Tobi Katou, in which he appeared to swallow a cow whole.
  6. The word "bovine" can be a synonym of slow-witted both in English and Japanese, as well as the animal, connecting back to the original trick.
