Aya: 「写真を取ろうとしたら逃げるのです、どこかで見た事があります」
Hatate: 「人のスペルを真似する妖怪が真似されてるよ、因果な話ね」
Tobiko: 「こんな陰湿な性格だから彼女は日の当たる所に出られぬのではないか」
Momiji: (いきなり撮影しようとしたら逃げるのは寧ろ普通の反応では…?)
Translation
Aya: She runs off as soon as I try to take a photo. This seems familiar...
Hatate: The youkai who, like, copies others' spell cards gets her own spell card copied. Is this karma?
Tobiko: Her body is sensitive to direct sunlight. Maybe it's because she's so gloomy.
Momiji: (Isn't it natural to run away when someone suddenly tries to photograph you...?)

燐光「アフームブリザード」 (Rinkō "Afūmu Burizādo")
Phosphorescence "Aphoom Blizzard" [2]

Comment
Aya: 「光で目を眩ませる作戦のようですが、カメラ越しなら効きませんよ」
Hatate: 「遮光性の高い特別なレンズで覗いているので良い子は真似しないでね」
Tobiko: 「美しい光であるが、実際は身体の腐敗に伴う発光現象、夢の無い話だ」
Momiji: (いや、妖怪のお前らがどいつもこいつも科学を語るなよ…)
Translation
Aya: She's using light to deceive the eyes, but it won't work if I look through my camera.
Hatate: I'm peeking through a special lens with shielding against strong light. Be obedient and don't copy me, kay?
Tobiko: This glorious light is but a result of the luminous properties of her corrupted body. Reality is harsh...
Momiji: (No, wait, we're all youkai, so why is this discussion so scientific...)

Aya: 「式がさらに式を出して来ましたね、やはりどこかで見た事があります」
Hatate: 「妖怪の賢者の式と違って、動物や人の姿にはならないんだねー」
Tobiko: 「決められた役目を果たさせるだけなら、洒落た姿は必要ないからな」
Momiji: (十二神将…哀れな…)
Translation
Aya: A shikigami that uses other shikigami to attack... this also seems familiar.
Hatate: This youkai's shikigami is different. Like, they don't look like animals nor like humans.
Tobiko: Shikigami need only perform their duties. Thus, there's hardly a need to show off physical forms.
Momiji: (The Twelve General Gods... how pitiful...)

零式「業烈陰陽陣」 (Reishiki "Gōretsu Onmyōjin")
Zeroth Familiar "Hellish Fury Yin-Yang Formation" [4]
Owner
Abe no Kiyohime
Level 8 — 4
Comment
Aya: 「あらゆる妖怪が科学で駆逐されるこの末法の時代」
Hatate:「人々の閉ざされた心の闇に入り込む魑魅魍魎が存在していた」
Tobiko:「それはやや置いといて、神妙不可思議にて胡散臭い蛇が一匹」
Momiji: (そう、人は彼女を…陰陽師と呼ぶ…!)
Translation
Aya: "In this Dharma-less era, where every difficulty can be solved by the youkai's rejection of science,"
Hatate: "The evil spirits exist in the hearts of the people buried in the darkness."
Tobiko: ...Let's skip the sentence in the middle. "A quiet, wicked and shady snake..."[5]
Momiji: (That's right, the people call her 'Onmyouji'...!)

Spell Card 8 - 5
和妻「チェンジリングネズミカン」[6] (Wazuma "Chenjiringu Nezumikan")
Wazuma "Changeling Mousitrus" [7]
Owner
Abe no Kiyohime
Level 8 — 5
Comment
Aya: 「ライバルと箱の中身をネズミやミカンに変えて勝負したとか」
Hatate: 「和妻とは古い言葉だね、今こういうのはマジックって言うのよね」
Tobiko: 「何とも親近感の湧く女史だ、しかし伝説では変化が逆だったが…」
Momiji: (元の逸話だとミカンからネズミに変えたそうだ…確かに逆だ…)
Translation
Aya: A duel to see if the box's contents will transform into oranges, or into rats.
Hatate: 'Wazuma' is an ancient phrase. We should just call it transformation magic, I guess.
Tobiko: She's quite friendly, but it's the opposite in the legend...
Momiji: (The original story had oranges transform into rats. Things have indeed reversed...)

Spell Card 8 - 6
八卦「神託の式神鳥」 (Hakke "Shintaku no Shikigami-dori")
Eight Trigrams "Oracle's Shikigami Birds" [8]
Owner
Abe no Kiyohime
Level 8 — 6
Comment
Aya: 「色鮮やかな七色の弾幕は、清姫殿の特徴的なものですね」
Hatate: 「神託って言うけど私達に何を伝えてるの?『死ね』とか?」
Tobiko: 「僕の解釈だと、これはシャンタク鳥に掛けた命名法だと思うんだ」
Momiji: (どこぞの神話の異端の神が使役するというアレか…アレなのか…)
Translation
Aya: A dazzling seven-colour danmaku onslaught. This is Lady Kiyohime's signature attack.
Hatate: But, like, what's the oracle trying to say to us? "Go and die"?
Tobiko: In my interpretation, this spell card name is trying to reference the Shantak birds.
Momiji: (They are a mythical heretic god's... uh, they are, uhm...)

Spell Card 8 - 7
狂符「ミラクルアヤツリウム」 (Kyōfu "Mirakuru Ayatsuriumu"")
Madness Sign "Miracle Manipulatorium" [9]
Owner
Nezu Akitsu
Level 8 — 7
Comment
Aya: 「こちらのカメラを操られて苦労しました、流石は恐怖の悪戯狐」
Hatate: 「正直弾幕の激しさ以外の要素で難易度上げるのはずるいと思う」
Tobiko: 「大目に見てあげたまえ、伝統的に5ボスはシステム干渉を行うからな」
Momiji: (メタ発言はやめろと言いたいが、確かに時間停止や操作反転とかあるな…)
Translation
Aya: To think she'd turn my own camera against me... she's indeed a terrifying mischievous fox.
Hatate: She's playing dirty tricks on top of the intense danmaku. That's, like, real sneaky.
Tobiko: Be a little more understanding, you two. 5th bosses tend to be gimmicky.
Momiji: (I want to stop this meta-speak, but 5th bosses indeed have tricks like time-meddling and concept-reversing...)

Spell Card 8 - 8
星狐「アキツネビュラ」 (Seiko "Akitsu Nebyura")
Star Fox "Akitsu Nebula"
Owner
Nezu Akitsu
Level 8 — 8
Comment
Aya: 「望遠の弱いカメラだと死ぬやつです、五爪龍タイプと名付けましょう」
Hatate: 「特定の私のトラウマを狙い撃ちでえぐるのやめてくんないかな…」
Tobiko: 「なに、望遠できても取り回しに癖のある僕のカメラも中々大変だぞ」
Momiji: (面倒な連中だ、避けて撃てば良いのに何故写真に拘る…)
Translation
Aya: This is the nemesis of cameras that lack zooming-in properties. Let's call it the "Five-Clawed Dragon" type.[10]
Hatate: Will you stop staring at me? Like, it hurts my fragile soul, you know.
Tobiko: Well, my camera has a large range, but its lack of maneuverability makes things hard, too.
Momiji: (This bunch is troublesome... why bring in cameras when you can just dodge and strike...)

Spell Card 8 - 9
操神「正一位蛙石大明神」 (Soushin "Shōichii Kawazuishi Daimyōjin")
Control God "Kawazu-Ishi Daimyoujin of Senior First Rank" [11]
Owner
Nezu Akitsu
Level 8 — 9
Comment
Aya: 「蛙の形をした殺生石ですが、正一位で大明神とは凄い地位ですね」
Hatate: 「名乗ったもん勝ちよ、多分ちくわ大明神とかもその辺にいると思う」
Tobiko: 「神の名を勝手に名乗るのは大天狗様もしておるな、確か迦楼羅天舞と…」
Momiji: (お前らの上司が後ろで赤面しているが良いのか)
Translation
Aya: This frog-shaped Sesshoseki acts as a Daimyoujin, and is of "Senior First Rank". What a lofty position.
Hatate: What a glorious title. Like, with a little more it'd reach "Bamboo Wheel Daimyoujin" standards.[12]
Tobiko: The Great Tengu had tried assuming the name of a god before. I think it was "Garuda's Heavenly Dance"...[13]
Momiji: (Your superior is standing right behind you, and her face is all red... is this really okay?)

Notes[edit]

  1. Pun on "Rlim Shaikorth" and Satori Komeiji's Spell Card "Camera-Shy Rose".
  2. Pun on "Aphoom-Zhah" and "blizzard".
  3. Yikilth is the name of the iceberg which Rlim Shaikorth travels on.
  4. 陰陽陣 (onmyoujin, "yin-yang/onmyou formation"): pun on 陰陽師 (onmyouji, "onmyou practicioner"). The card is based on the rhythm game maimai; more specifically, the beatmap for the memetic song Let's Go! Onmyouji from the fighting game Shin Goketsuji Ichizoku. (Comparison video from developer's Twitter) Aya and Hatate's comments also parody the voice-over from the start of the song.
  5. The comments parody the voice-over from Let's Go! Onmyouji. The original lyrics are: "In this Heisei era, where every difficulty can be solved by science, the evil spirits exist in the hearts of the people buried in the darkness. As the power of science is unable to do anything, lone person fights against those mysterious fellows (Tobiko skips this sentence). A quiet, unfathomable and shady man... His name is Yabeno Hikomaro. That's right, the people call him 'Onmyouji'."
  6. Pun on mouse ( nezumi) and orange (蜜柑 mikan).
  7. As mentioned in Aya and Hatate's comments, "wazuma" is an old word for traditional Japanese magic, and an anecdote about Abe no Seimei details how he turned a box of oranges into a box of rats during a duel with one of his rivals.
  8. Shintaku no shikigami-dori: As mentioned in Tobiko's comment, this is a pun on shantaku-dori (Shantak birds).
  9. The kanji "狂" (madness) and the phrases "ミラクル" (mirakuru / miracle) and "アヤツリ" (ayatsuri / manipulation) reference fan character Riran Miramikaru, the villain of the memetic fan animation series "The Manipulation Incident" (アヤツリ異変).
  10. This spell card is similar to Iku's Orb Sign "Orb of the Five-Clawed Dragon".
  11. A reference to the god Inari Daimyoujin of Senior First Rank (正一位稲荷大明神, shouichi'i inari daimyoujin), as well as the frog-shaped stone ("kawazu-ishi") worshipped as a branch shrine of the Houjou Inari shrine.
  12. This phrase came from 2channel, but its meaning is unclear.
  13. A reference to Tenmu's final spell on Normal/Hard mode in Mystical Power Plant.
