Vanilla Netplay

Similar to Phantasmagoria of Flower View, UDoALG features a built-in netplay system, accessible from the "Online VS Mode" option in the main menu from v0.02a onwards.

From the menu, you can customize your username as well as the room name you want to join. It is customary to append your region to your username, e.g. "williewillus [NA West]", so that people have an expectation of how bad the lag will be.

Once you have set the room name, select "Join Room" to enter the room. Once another player also enters the room, P1 (the player first entering the room) will have an option to customize the delay, from No Delay up to High Delay. The higher the delay, the smoother the framerate of the game, but also the higher the chance the game will desync.

When selecting the delay, you can observe the framerate in the lower right corner, which will give you an approximate idea of what the framerate will be in-game, and adjust the delay accordingly. The players then enter the difficulty and character selection screens.

"Random Match" will attempt to match you up with other players that are also waiting on a random match.

Bugs

The character selection screen retains its state from the last match, which can lead to desyncs where one side has a different idea of which characters are selected than the other side. To avoid this, every time you back out to the Online VS Mode menu after a match, you should restart the game.

Ju.N.Owen

Ju.N.Owen (junowen) is a fan modification that greatly improves the game's netplay support. As of 2024, it is the preferred option for competitive play. It can be found on GitHub with instructions for setup and use.
