Testing done on Windows 10.

List of tools tested (or to be tested):

  • [AppLocale]
  • [pAppLocale]
  • [LocaleSwitch]
  • Ntleas by littlewater and popcade.
  • Locale Emulator by xupefei, for Windows 7/8/10. Supports 32-bit software only.

General comments: On Windows 10 post-Anniversary Update LocaleSwitch will give the error of "Cannot open nls file." To resolve this error one needs to copy the nls files into C:\Windows\SYSWOW64 from an earlier version.

Tests are below.

7-Zip x64

Test description: Run 7zFM.exe. Open a zip file with Japanese filenames and check to see if the names rendered correctly.

Desired outcome: Names render in Japanese (e.g. ネイティブフェイスファミコンアレンジ.ogg)

Control outcome: Names render in mojibake (e.g. âlâCâeâBâuâtâFâCâXâtâ@â~âRâôâAâîâôâW.ogg)

  • LocaleSwitch: Gives error, runs as control.
  • Ntleas: Runs as desired.
  • Locale Emulator: n/a (when forced runs as control)

New Danmaku Chiku Onki

Test description: Run NewDanChiku_DX10.exe, check options dialog, check in-game text, and attempt to open a file with Japanese filename.

Control outcome: Options dialog renders in mojibake. In-game text is corrupted (rendering mostly dots). Japanese filenames render in question marks. When opening the file, the stage ends without the song playing and any bullets appearing.

  • LocaleSwitch: Options dialog renders as question marks. Window title, in-game text correct. Japanese filenames are truncated. Opening a file ends as control.
  • Ntleas: Options dialog, window title, in-game text correct. Game crashes on attempting to enter file select screen.
  • Locale Emulator: Runs as desired.

RPG Maker 2000 RTP

Test description: Run the extracted installer as administrator and install into default directory.

Desired outcome: Installer renders correctly and completes.

Control outcome: Installer renders in mojibake and question marks, fails at 44% with the error "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

  • LocaleSwitch: Loader renders in question marks. Installer same as control.
  • Ntleas: Same as control.
  • Locale Emulator: InstallShield loader renders correctly, but installer is the same as control.
