Reimu Hakurei (博麗 霊夢) is one of the main characters of the Touhou series, having appeared in almost every game in the series. As the sole maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, she is commonly called upon (or calls it upon herself) to investigate strange occurrences throughout the world.
Concept
Name
She is known as Reimu Hakurei (博麗 霊夢), the characters for Reimu's last name Hakurei (博麗) literally mean something like "esteemed companion", the first word Haku (博) means "wide" or "exposition" while Rei (麗) means "lovely", "graceful", and "beautiful". Her first name Reimu (霊夢) means "revelatory dream" or "a vision", the first word, Rei (霊) means "spirit" or "soul" while Yume (夢) is read Mu and means "dream".
The surname Hakurei is also another name for sake, as the maker of the Touhou series, ZUN, is quite the connoisseur of "spirits", so much so that fans often speculate over whether ZUN might be or have been an alcoholic.
Appearance
Reimu, in her latest iteration Ten Desires, she portrayed as having brown eyes and brown hair at above-shoulder length, with two longer sections bordering her face. She wears red and white clothes remotely similar to a shrine maiden outfit with detached sleeves leaving her shoulders uncovered, it is also to note that the bottom of her skirt has frills and is shorter than in previous iterations of Reimu's design. She wears a yellow neckerchief as well as a large red and white frilly ribbon attached to her hair, the latter having a flower shaped insignia on its sides. She carries a gohei with many paper seals attached to it in streamers with her as well.
As a side-note, on Ten Desires' main menu, Reimu is shown with longer hair, a longer skirt, and a longer gohei.
Past Appearance
She had a much different appearance in her PC-98 years. From Highly Responsive to Prayers onwards to Lotus Land Story, Reimu is depicted as having purple eyes and long purple hair. She wears red and white clothes resembling a traditional shrine maiden outfit, as well as a large red ribbon tied to her hair. From Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream to Lotus Land Story, Reimu is depicted holding a gohei.
(Touhou 6) In Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Reimu has dark red eyes and short black hair. She wears a red and white dress remotely similar to a shrine maiden outfit with detached sleeves leaving her shoulders uncovered. She also wears a red neckerchief, a large red ribbon tied to her hair, and she carries a gohei with many paper seals attached in streamers.
(Touhou 7) In Perfect Cherry Blossom, Reimu is similar to her Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (Touhou 6) depiction. Except that her hair is longer, her eyes are now brown to grey instead of dark red, her collar is larger, and her attire has many frills added to the edges of her clothes. She is also wearing a pair of white gloves in her manual portrait, which are absent from her in-game portrait.
(Touhou 7.5) In Immaterial and Missing Power, Reimu is similar to her Perfect Cherry Blossom (Touhou 7) depiction. Except that her eyes are now blue, her neckerchief is yellow, and her outfit is solidly colored.
(Touhou 8) In Imperishable Night, Reimu is similar to her Perfect Cherry Blossom (Touhou 7) depiction. Except that her hair is dark brown and short, her eyes are a brownish gray, her collar is white instead of red, and her ribbon is larger and frillier.
(Touhou 9) In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Reimu is similar to her Imperishable Night (Touhou 9) depiction. Except that her hair grew from shoulder-length to the middle of her back, her eyes are a reddish brown, her hair ribbon contain a cherry blossom insignia in the corner, and her gohei sprouts flowers from the top.
(Touhou 10) In Mountain of Faith, Reimu is identical to her Immaterial and Missing Power (Touhou 7.5) depiction. The only difference is that her eyes are now a deep red instead of blue.
(Touhou 10.5) In Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Reimu is identical to her Mountain of Faith (Touhou 10) depiction.
(Touhou 11) In Subterranean Animism, Reimu is similar to her Mountain of Faith (Touhou 10) depiction. Except that her hair is now at shoulder-length again, her eyes are a very dark brown, and her neckerchief is blue with a yellow ribbon tied to it.
(Touhou 12) In Undefined Fantastic Object, Reimu is similar to her Subterranean Animism (Touhou 11) depiction. Except that her hair has grown past her shoulders and is now more violet and less brown in color, and her neckerchief is entirely yellow again.
Occupation
Reimu is the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, rarely visited by humans. As stated in her multiple game profiles, Her daily occupations consist of maintaining the shrine, drinking tea, and enjoying life on the veranda. According to her article in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, she pretends that she maintains her shrine, and is often seen going out to shop in the Human Village whilst also teaching a few malevolent youkai a lesson. She is often visited by youkai, whom she discuss and drink tea with.
She is also one of the main persons to investigate weird phenomenons in Gensokyo, especially when it interferes with her daily activities or if she can reap a personal benefit out of it.
Relationships
Reimu knows a lot of people since she goes out and resolves incidents, and is often visited afterwards by most of the youkai/humans she meets, most of which are friendly to her. Although, you can say that she is very close friends with Marisa Kirisame, who spends a lot of her time at the shrine. It is also worth noting that Suika Ibuki freeloads Reimu's shrine at times.

After the Hakurei Shrine is wrecked by something/someone, Reimu decides to go after the troublemakers.

During the autumn, the shrine is visited by a mysterious stranger who claims to represent a god of the mountains and orders Reimu to shut down her shrine. Reimu travels to the Youkai Mountain to confront the goddess behind the threats.

Bizarre weather phenomenons start to happen in the summer, as well as the Hakurei Shrine getting leveled by a sudden earthquake. Being attacked directly, Reimu sets out to punish the perpetrator.

Evil spirits come out from the undergrounds and wander into Gensokyo. Reimu goes out to investigate with either the help of Yukari Yakumo, Suika Ibuki, or Aya Shameimaru, who watch over her during the investigation.

Rumors spread around Gensokyo concerning a flying ship, believing the ship to be a treasure ship, Reimu decides to chase after it in an attempt to plunder it.

Backstory
In earlier games, Reimu's spiritual abilities were highly limited. (In Highly Responsive to Prayers, she was in fact unable to harm enemies directly at all.) As time went by, however, she developed her abilities, becoming able to use the Yin-Yang Orb, special amulets and her own (limited) spiritual power in order to fight more effectively. Sometime between Mystic Square and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, this culminated in her developing the ability to fly under her own power. (Before then, she relied on Genjii, her turtle familiar, to fly, and in fact did not fly at all in Highly Responsive to Prayers.)
As her abilities have changed, so has Reimu's personality. She is commonly described as easygoing, curious, at least somewhat dutiful (at least, the shrine hasn't fallen apart due to negligence on her part), and optimistic—sometimes overly so. Her personality seems sympathetic toward many individuals; there are few people indeed who remain her rivals past the first game in which they appear (though this is not to say she doesn't get into fights after the first meeting), and the shrine has become a moderately popular hangout for some of Gensokyo's more interesting female individuals.

Trivia
- Reimu has appeared as a playable character in every integer-numbered game in the Touhou series.
- She was the second extra boss in the Seihou game Shuusou Gyoku.
- She makes an official appearance as "Flying Maiden" in Graffiti Kingdom, as ZUN was involved in the production of it.
- She appeared on the cover of all the PC-98 Touhou games, from the first game in the series to the fifth.
- She was never seen flying with her own power until Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. In the previous games, if Reimu needed to go somewhere far, she would ride on her turtle familiar, Genjii.
- Although her many profiles suggest that the "Hakurei Clan" and the shrine Reimu lives at have been in Gensokyo for long enough to be considered ancient, there has never been any mention of Reimu's family members, ancestors, etc. It is originally stated that she lives alone at the shrine, but other rarely seen characters (Mima and SinGyoku) are known to stay there or near there as well.
- Reimu's Yin-Yang Orb exhibits some strange powers, aside from helping her attack her enemies. The greatest powers of the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orb are:
- Even if you eat sweets, you won't get fat
- One of your favorite aromas can be given off
- The yin-yang orb can be disguised as a cat
- In Imperishable Night Reimu is the only one whose partner doesn't mention the danger of the full moon.
- When playing Yukari's story mode in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Reimu breaks down in tears in the ending after Yukari defeats Tenshi and reduces the Hakurei Shrine to rubble for the second time, with Sakuya and Youmu looking on helplessly (although Suika offers to help rebuild it). This marks the first and only time where she is seen crying in a storyline scenario.
- Reimu seems to be scared before and after the boss battle with the Five Magic Stones, thus making this the only ever time that Reimu was scared and/or afraid of a boss before and after the battle.
- Reimu's Last Word 「夢想天生」 "Fantasy Heaven" (Pronounced: Musou Tensei) is a homonym of 「無想転生」 "Unconscious Transmigration of Souls" (Also pronounced: Musou Tensei), Kenshiro's ultimate technique in Hokuto no Ken. In 12.3, if you activate Fantasy Heaven successfully in a 3rd round, a remix of Mystical Oriental Love Consultation will play with the sounds of the Fatal KO theme from the Hokuto no Ken fighting game, fitting because activation of the said Spell Card means the opponent is certainly already dead! Because of this it is now known as the Hakurei Hyakuretsu Ken to some fans.
- In Touhou Hisoutensoku, one of her alternative palettes looks similar to VIVIT, the heroine of Seihou. Also, one of her palettes seems to be another maid homage, Ruukoto, or possibly Sanae's colors. The palette also seems to resemble Mima from Highly Responsive to Prayers. Her white/light gray palette seems to resemble Toki from Hokuto no Ken. And finally, her white/light blue palette looks like a tribute to Nanoha, as they both tend to "befriend" their opponents with superior firepower.
- In Lotus Land Story, when you clear Easy Mode with Reimu and just before the Name Registry screen shows up, you get a Congratulation screen with a drawing of her wearing an outfit that very closely resembles her outfit from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (save for non-detached sleeves).
- Most of her theme from Lotus Land Story sounds similar to Elis and Kikuri's theme from Highly Responsive to Prayers, Magic Mirror.
Fandom
- Because of how she dresses in the Windows Touhou Games, her exposed armpits are sometimes the target of jokes and memes, with "Waki Miko Reimu" or 「腋巫女霊夢」 being a popular phrase.
- There is also a recurring joke that nobody ever donates to her for the shrine, leading many to think that she is destitute. This, "Binbou Miko" or 「貧乏巫女」 (meaning "destitute miko") is also a popular phrase.
- It's speculated that two or more Reimu(s) may exist. The circumstantial evidence suggests 靈夢 (from the PC-98 games) and 霊夢 (from the Windows games) may be different people. However, this is extraordinarily unlikely, as both Alice and Yuuka recall Reimu, and ZUN uses the new kanji to refer to the old Reimu now. Also, her bio in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's "おまけ.txt" file says, "Chronologically this title is not too far from the previous title, thus her age stays the same as before". Since the previous title in question would be Mystic Square, the last game in which PC-98 Reimu appeared in, and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the first game in which Windows Reimu appears, the bio appears to further debunk this theory.
- The drastic change in the color of Reimu's skin tone over the course of the Windows games (most noticeable in Mountain of Faith, in which her skin appears yellowish and almost jaundiced) raised eyebrows and led to a number of jokes and dubious theories, the most common of which is that she is actually an undead zombie.

Book Synopsis
Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red

Taking place a year after the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, the interview is about the Flower Viewing at the Hakurei Shrine. In the interview, Reimu complains about the work she has to do after the banquet, so Aya promptly appeases her with sake, exploiting her weakness. Aya then proceeds to try and worm information regarding the incident from Reimu, who is getting drunk.
The rest of the article consist of Aya and Reimu bickering when Reimu herself is obviously drunk.
- Reimu makes constant remarks, similar to the rest of the Touhou cast's, that the Bunbunmaru Newspaper is full of lies.
- Aya makes no effort at all to recognize Reimu's deeds.
- From the article, it seems that Reimu, not Marisa, is responsible for stopping those incidents.
Perfect Memento in Strict Sense

- Reimu lives in the Hakurei Shrine and is supposedly tasked with the maintenance of the Great Boundary.
- Apparently Reimu has great luck, intuition and talent, and does not train.
- Her personality never changes, and she treats everyone equally.
- However, her view on youkai is that one should hunt them without complaint.
- Her real ability is the ability to fly, and with the power of the Hakurei Shrine maiden, she is unrivaled.
- No youkai dares oppose her, for if she is defeated, the Great Boundary might collapse.
- Reimu thus has Gensokyo in the palm of hand, so to speak.
- Reimu invented the Spell Card rules, which are intended to allow youkai and humans to settle conflicts without the use of lethal force.

- Of course, since she teaches youkai lessons on her way there, she might get paid for that...
